Genuine Reason For Sale
Opportunity To Negotiate Further Purchase Of all Tools, Eqpt. & Vehicles Required
A fantastic opportunity to acquire a successful Swindon based Paving & Landscaping business, trading for 20+ years in North Wiltshire & the surrounding counties.
The business currently carries out predominantly domestic projects, together with some school works and work for local businesses. The current range of works includes everything from full garden design & build to patio and driveway paving projects, decking, turfing, artificial grass installation, fencing, timber building & structure installations, planting, garden lighting, walling, etc. In short, almost anything garden / outside space related apart from maintenance works, (which a future owner could easily add if they wished).
The business currently takes on projects within Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire & Worcestershire. Predominantly the bulk of the work carried out would be within a 20 mile radius of Swindon, although larger projects are tackled further afield, dependent on their merit.
REASON FOR SALE
The current owners are looking to perhaps relocate and try an unrelated business venture. They've fully enjoyed running this business for near 25 years, but think the time will come soon when a different kind of business / lifestyle will suit them better.
The business has been run for most of its existence as a husband / wife partnership, with some overlap in duties but predominantly with one partner looking after site works and quotations and the other partner managing invoicing, admin, customer enquiries & accountancy. Overlaps include opportunities to "escape the office" to do site planting, (thoroughly enjoyable), presenting material samples to clients and collecting small materials requirements. Conversely a "break from site" can be welcomed now and again to do some website & social media development, garden design and other non-site related tasks. A wonderful balance !
The business currently employs 2 full time employees, to carry out the site works alongside the owners.
Included in the sale is the 20+ year old company web domain, a comprehensive website, project imagery and if possible, the 100+ 4/5 star online reviews the business currently enjoys.
The current owners are keen to keep things as flexible as possible for a prospective purchaser and although not included, they would be more than happy to fairly negotiate the purchase of any or all of the current vehicles and equipment associated with the business. This includes three vans and all the tools and equipment needed to carry out the comprehensive paving & landscaping services the business carries out.
The business has an almost negligible advertising spend of £150 annually, with the vast majority of enquiries arising from past customers, recommendations, the business's online presence and the well-known name of the business as a long-standing operator in this field of work.
The business has traded at a turnover of £250k+ for many years, with recent years being c£280k & c£300k respectively. Gross profit is very healthy and available on request.
Why buy an established business and not simply start a business from scratch ?
Not many business ad's fully explain this in straightforward & honest terms. Simply put, it takes a long time to build a trusted, well known business name and it comes through the cost of both time and money. Time spent completing works to a high standard, on time and on budget and cost through the extensive use of advertising. A business like the one on offer has done that over more than 2 decades and benefits hugely form having annual advertising of less than £150 and a near perfect list of online customer reviews and strong web presence. That means the enquiries constantly flow in and allow the business owners to selectively choose which enquiries to pursue. Those enquiries are from new customers who are looking for a well-established business with great reviews, along with a high percentage of return customers who have often had previous work completed by the business over tens of years.
Replicating all that with a start-up business can be done, it just takes time and money !
For perhaps the first decade, the annual advertising spend for the business was £10-£15k a year and it's nice at this stage of business maturity, to be benefiting from all that hard work and past investment.
The business has been run from a home office for all its time in existence and a new owner could certainly continue to do so. There has not been the need for a yard or lock-up, but depending on the prospective owners situation, this is something they could explore.
1. At many times of the year enquiries outstrip the current owner's ability to deal with them, meaning a certain amount of "cherry-picking" and turning down enquiries for commercial / site works, small works, maintenance works, etc. Future owners may decide to increase turnover and expand the business offering by developing these opportunities.
2. The current advertising spend is almost zero, (at 0.05% of turnover). Future owners might adopt a position where the adopt an advertising spend in line with industry norms and boost business enquiries even further through that approach.
3. The business could certainly be relocated anywhere within a reasonable radius of its Swindon base. Relocating further out could negate the benefits of the current brand awareness or involve more travelling to and from site works.
4. Although the business is run by a husband / wife partnership, it could easily be run by two unrelated business partners or a single owner willing to employ someone further to help with either the admin or site-works element of the business.
5. Certainly a new owner could decide to focus more on any one of the many services the business currently offers. More timber work / decking perhaps, a more paving focused offering, developing the artificial grass side more, the possibilities are numerable !
